In 1995 the Red Angus Association of America introduced two revolutionary programs, Total Herd Reporting (THR) and the Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). These industry first programs are closely interrelated and achieve unprecedented accountability in both the seedstock and commercial segments of our industry.
Total Herd Reporting FCCP
- Red Angus 'THR' is a complete performance program that requires that production of every registered Red Angus cow and the performance of every Red Angus calf be accounted for every year. If a cow is not accounted for she is inactivated from the registry.
- THR has allowed the Red Angus Association to switch from a traditional fee structure to an inventory based fee structure. With this fee structure there is no additional charge for registering and transferring cattle. This is a key component of the FCCP because it removes the financial barrier of the registration and transfer of seedstock bulls purchased by commercial cattle producers.
- To certify cattle, a producer or feedlot manager must contact the National Office. The National Office then assesses the file, through the THR database, of the ranch that produced the calves in question. A listing of the registered bulls and females is displayed, and certification is granted or denied based on this information.
- After eligibility is determined, the official yellow "RED ANGUS" ear tag is shipped from the National Office to the producer. The back of each tag is imprinted with a six-digit serial number, which is used in assigning a group of tags to a specific set of cattle.

FCCP was introduced as the first USDA approved and audited, genotypic and source verified feeder calf program in the beef industry.

The Red Angus FCCP is approved and audited by the USDA AMS as providing direct traceability to at least 50% Red Angus bloodlines.
